Common Ground
Common Ground exists to address Southeastern Wisconsin's critical social issues in an effective, non-partisan way. It is an organization consisting of member organizations coming together for the common good. Current membership includes faith communities, non-profits, and small businesses. St. Anthony on the Lake joined Common Ground as a founding member in 2008.
The foundation for current action issues were listening sessions held where over 1,400 people discussed issues affecting their lives. The most frequently mentioned areas of concern were health care, education, jobs and economic development, crime, mental health, youth activities, immigration and affordable housing.
Leadership training workshops called “Common Ground U” teach volunteers the basics of community organizing. Common Ground U will be held at St. Anthony on the Lake in October of 2009.
There are current action campaigns to start a healthcare co-op to provide reasonably priced health insurance to individuals, small businesses and non-profits; to help the city of Milwaukee to provide summer job experiences for inner city youth; and to help Habitat for Humanity gain approval to build affordable housing in Grafton.
Common Ground is a vehicle for participation in the decisions that affect your community. To find out more, contact Clare at 691-9170 x119, or visit the website at www.commongroundwi.org.
