First Sunday of Advent
Happy New Year!
The First Sunday of Advent is more than the beginning of a beautiful season; it is the start of a brand-new liturgical year. While the world waits until January to turn the page, the Church begins anew in these hope-filled weeks leading to Christmas. Advent is a season of watching and waiting, of preparing our hearts to welcome Christ not only at his birth, but in our daily lives, and in his promised coming again.
There is something refreshing about beginning the year with light rather than noise, with candles and reflection rather than fireworks and resolutions. Advent invites us to slow down, breathe deeply, and listen for God’s voice in the midst of our busy world.
Because this is a new year for the Church, it’s a perfect time to consider setting a new liturgical year resolution—a simple, intentional commitment that helps you grow in faith. It doesn’t need to be big or complicated. Perhaps it’s praying with Scripture each morning, attending one weekday Mass a month, reaching out to a neighbor in need, or returning to a sacrament you’ve been away from. Whatever it is, let it be something that draws you closer to Christ and opens the door of your heart to his presence.
Another powerful way to shape your resolution is by offering your time and talent in a new or renewed way. Perhaps you feel called to volunteer periodically, to use a skill or gift in service to others, or to find a way to intentionally and joyfully to support the mission of the parish. Stewardship, approached prayerfully, becomes a pathway to spiritual growth and deeper belonging. If you are looking for a way to share your time and talent here at the parish or in the greater community, check out our Ministry and Prayer Opportunities. You can review the Ministry Handbook to learn more about each of the ministries, and then submit your name and someone will contact you and help you get involved.
As we step into this new liturgical year, may Advent be a season of renewed hope, quiet preparation, and heartfelt openness to the presence of Christ in your life.
