School Mass Singers

At St. Anthony on the Lake Catholic Parish, the School Mass Singers children's choir brings the liturgy to life every week. Open to students in grades 3–8 who attend St. Anthony on the Lake school, this vibrant ensemble leads the music during the Wednesday morning school liturgies. The choir offers an experience that is fun for younger members and equally engaging for older students, operating much like a team sport where members depend on each other and give their best. Through their ministry, students deepen their faith by participating actively in the Mass and learning to pray as they sing, transforming their musical talents into a profound spiritual offering.

The choir provides rich opportunities for leadership and service to both the congregation and fellow members. Students learn to play an array of instruments, including chimes, xylophones, bells, and occasionally drums. They also learn how to use the microphones, lead in small groups, and even cantor the psalm and gospel acclamation as solo singers. As they grow, older students take on the challenge of singing in 2-3 part harmony. Twice a year, a special tradition unfolds when the first and second grade classes join the choir. This music features claps, signs and motions, and chimes for the younger students, which gives the older choir members an exciting chance to step up and direct the choir.

No two weeks are ever the same, keeping the ministry dynamic and highly engaging. The music changes biweekly, and students constantly rotate their seating and choir assignments. One week a student might cantor, while the next they might play the chimes or lead a small group at the microphone. This constant rotation ensures that choir members are always ready because it is always “your turn” to lead something. This fast-paced, collaborative environment teaches adaptability and teamwork, making the School Mass Singers a foundational pillar of the parish's musical and spiritual community.
