Americans on their way to Sainthood
Friar Martin de Porres Maria Ward
Did you know one American on the way to sainthood once attended Salvatorian’s Seminary in St. Nazianz, Wisconsin? Servant of God Friar Martin de Porres Maria Ward, born Mattias Dewitte Ward, was the eldest of thirteen children of a bi-racial family. Although his family was Methodist, at age thirteen, young Mattias converted to Catholicism and was ordained in 1955, becoming the first African American Conventual Franciscan Friar in North America. After ordination, he volunteered for missions in Brazil and spent most of his vocation in Andrelandia, Brazil, where he dedicated his life to the poor.

Friar Martin de Porres Maria Ward was known for his engaging personality, who loved to laugh and get others to laugh. He was a warm, cheerful, and passionate teacher. Overcoming many difficulties, including prejudice and an infectious pulmonary disease, he had great devotion to the Immaculate Virgin to whom he consecrated his vocation and to whom he turned in times of trouble. A true follower of St. Francis of Assisi, he spread the greeting, “Peace and Good”.
