Our Common Home and Us
Our Common Home and Us: Air, Water and Food
Imagine testing your 4 year old child for lead poisoning, and discovering that her levels were so high she needed immediate hospitalization. Imagine witnessing your 8 year old grandson die during an asthma attack. Imagine buying the bulk of your “groceries” from a corner liquor store because a grocery store - and fresh produce - is not within walking distance. These are the experiences our friends - heroes - from the MacCanon Brown Homeless Sanctuary (MBHS) shared with us during the recent “Our Common Home and Us: Air, Water, and Food” event here at St. Anthony’s. They also shared about the successful garden program, the goal of providing lead tests and kits to 1000+ children, and the improvement in air quality since 1990. We learned that our faith provides wonderful grounding for an “integral ecology” in which we care for one another and our environment. Participants felt moved, inspired, and empowered.
